HERITAGE
The National Tidy Towns competition gives marks for the extent to which a town's heritage has been protected. Many different organisations play a role in protecting and promoting our heritage. For example, a draft Council Heritage plan can be accessed on the heritage section of our library's website www.longfordlibrary.ie and is worth a browse. Longford Town's listed buildings are included in the Town Council's Development Plan. Contrary to public perception, a large number of these buildings are well maintained and we included details of these in our recent application to the Tidy Towns competition.

FAMINE CEMETERY
We nominated the Famine Cemetery for a Heritage Award in our Tidy Towns application. The cemetery is located beside St Josephs Hospital on The Dublin Road and is a wonderful local resource. If you haven't visited this area, make sure to do so soon. You can drive right up to the Cemetery area from where you will also get a great view of the magnificent Convent buildings in the distance. As you drive off the Dublin Road take note of the Historical Society's memorial honouring Padraic Colum, a famous Longford poet.

RECENT WORK
We recently painted some derelict houses at St Michael's road. Well done to those involved in ongoing tidy ups, particularly to those who recently carried out tidy ups at Mullagh, Farneyhoogan and at the hill leading towards Moydow. We carried out a tidy up of serious level of litter at Little Water Street over the weekend.

Local residential area groups are doing trojan work around the town and approach areas. It is such a pleasure to see so many well maintained areas with flowers, well maintained landscapes, new trees, new shrubs and freshly painted properties. If you haven't yet brightened up your own property, garden and outside walls, consider doing it now. Such improvements bring you great pleasure and pride when done - and help the town's marks in the Tidy Towns competition.

THANKS
Thanks to Eircom for removing a few redundant poles from around the town. Reponses to issues like this really helps improve overall tidiness.

LITTER WARDEN
Litter offences can be reported to the Town Council Litter Warden, Paric McGee at 043 46474. Litter issues outside the 30mph signs should be reported to the County Council (043 46231) Litter Warden, Colm McInerney.
