IBAL 2ND LITTER SURVEY 2004 - REPORT ON LONGFORD
Longford's score increased from 63% to 73%, achieving three more
'clean to European norms' sites than in the first IBAL survey earlier
this year. It finished in 12th place out of 30 towns. However, there
were seriously littered sites at the Railway Station, Annaly Park
and at St Michael's Road. Annaly Park had several areas which need
to be addressed and at St Michael's Road the derelict buildings
have become an eyesore.
CLEAN
TO EUROPEAN NORMS (GRADE A)
1. St Michael's National School:
This school area has maintained its Grade A rating and was excellent,
as always.
2.
Library:
This excellent site had no litter and the previous graffiti problem
hasn't re-emerged.
3.
Shopping Centre Car Park:
Despite the lack of litter bins, this site was litter free. There
were separate cigarette butt units and the recycle facilities were
in very good condition.
4.
Mall Sports and Leisure Complex:
Clean to European Norms. This was an excellent site with litter
bins and road signage which were in very good condition.
5.
Canal Walk:
The Canal Walk has improved to Grade A from a previous Grade B.
There was no litter and it was in good condition.
MODERATELY
LITTERED (GRADE B)
1. Ballymahon Street:
The road signage was very good and the road surface was good but
the litter bins were in very poor condition - they were dirty and
grimy. There was some general pedestrian litter with some of the
drains overflowing on the street.
2.
Townspark Industrial Estate:
There appears to be on-going works here with some premises being
repainted. While the area was somewhat untidy, things have improved
on previous litter survey visits.
SERIOUS LITTER PROBLEM (GRADE C)
1. Railway Station:
There has been a deterioration at the train station with litter
on the train tracks and cigarette butts outside the main entrance.
While the station itself was tidy there was litter on the bridge
walkway, where bins are so obviously needed. Separate cigarette
units are required at the main entrance and the road signage was
in good condition.
2.
Annaly Park:
There was litter on some of the greens and public play areas. It
would seem that litter bins are required here. There was also litter
at the back lanes of the houses. The estate road sign is damaged
and needs to be replaced and there was an eyesore at the end of
the estate.
3.
St Michael's Road:
This area needs attention with some derelict buildings becoming
an eyesore. The litter problem was worst in the shrubs and lawn
area. There was some graffiti present and the road signage was in
poor condition.
