AN GAEILGE

INTRODUCTION
We have listed below examples of the use of Irish throughout our town. We are lucky to have a dedicated Irish school "Gael Scoil" which is located at Harbour Row (between Market Square and Killashee Street).

We are also fortunate to have a Council sub committee "An Coiste Logainmneacha Longfoirt" which has been responsible for greater use of Irish in names for new developments in our town.

BUSINESSES

  • Tesco shopping centre - Large "Fáilte" sign at entrance to supermarket. All goods locations bilingual (eg bread, wines… )
  • Athlone Road - new commercial development opposite McNally Motors - named Cúirt an Oir
  • Dublin Street - An Grán Ór
  • Main Street - Oifig an Phoist
  • Market Square /Ballymahon Street - Market Bar - prominent sign "Criolar na feile- tar isteach agus lig do scith"
  • Market Square- John Browns pub - "teach tabhairne"
  • Main Street - Supermacs restaurant " - prominent sign highly visible to passing traffic "Fáilte go Longphuirt"
  • Richmond Street- Longford Arms - numerous signs in Irish eg "Bialann- Ostan Arms Longfoirt- Siopa Café (another sign remembers a former garage at that location "Deisiuchan - Garáiste"
  • Strokestown Road - Gleann Riada -new major residential development by Flancare .
